CORIAN® CABANA CLUB, Exploring the World of Maximalism

Founded in 2014, interiors magazine Cabana has become an international success by featuring homes full of character and color. Led by founder and editor-in-chief Martina Mondadori Sartogo, the publication was the perfect partner to highlight the decorative potential of Corian® Solid Surface.

With Milan Design Week 2017 as a backdrop, Corian® Design and Cabana magazine organized a much-talked about exhibition that presented seven interior scenes in maximalist patterns and colors to demonstrate the expressive qualities of a series of fascinating aesthetics of Corian® Solid Surface. Mondadori Sartogo, together with Christoph Radl, creative director of Cabana, curated the show in collaboration with Martino Berghinz Studio. The interiors were presented in seven cabana-style structures, each inspired by a different culture and each designed by talented personalities drawn from the fields of interior design, decoration and fashion.

The concept was to create a multicultural village that projected a modern day Shangri-La rich in color and contrasts where several new aesthetics of Corian® Solid Surface served as the centerpiece of the show.

Sleep + Eat (20th-21st November, Eat Sets, Stand F30, Olympia, London) : Register to attend

How can designers for the hospitality sector ensure their projects meet all the key criteria from sophisticated elegance to reliable performance? Selected by architects and designers who are creating special features for two shows (Sleep + Eat 2018 and The Independent Hotel Show 2018), Corian® demonstrates why it is perfectly suited to high-impact hospitality design. Renowned for over 50 years for adding meaningful value, Corian®Solid Surface is also among the most future conscious of materials and a wise investment in lasting performance.

An unbeatable combination of beauty, versatility and resistance to wear and tear has been put to work with great success in quality establishments around the world. Applications range from striking reception areas to elegant, easy-care bathrooms, chic bedroom furniture and stylish bar tops. Capable of bringing a distinctive identity to any design scheme, Corian® can also master any number of technical challenges, from incorporating smart technology and lighting effects to unique or branded decorative details.

Particular qualities set Corian® apart as the ideal answer to pristine ‘wet-areas’ from food and beverage service to spa facilities and washrooms. Completely homogenous, non-porous and straightforward to maintain, Corian® can eliminate the need for grout and visible seals that could become vulnerable to mould and mildew. Sleek, hygienic and stain-resistant, the material is robust and durable, but can be restored to full beauty should any damage occur. And now, new Corian® Resilience Technology™ in four dedicated colours specially created for high-traffic environments offers even greater resistance and damage forgiveness, without sacrificing design versatility.

Eat Sets by Echo Architecture at Sleep+Eat:

In addition to the perennial and ever-popular Sleep Sets, Sleep + Eat is this year sees the debut of the Eat Sets – a collection of concept rooms based on restaurant and bar spaces. Three UK-based design firms are creating interactive installations that will challenge and subvert visitors’ expectations. Echo Architecture has chosen Corian® to help transport visitors to a Cornish seaside restaurant. Eugene Sellors, Director Head of Design at ECHO Architecture says, “Dining is all about responses. We don’t just experience the food, service and table settings, our memories are made up of a collection of emotions, created by a dialogue between the senses and the connections we feel. This is what we want to deliver in our Eat Set. Ours is a multi-sensory concept that uses state-of-the-art technology alongside sensitive design, intelligent lighting, 3D sound-scaping and emotive food samples to create individual experiences unique to each guest and time of day.” Corian® will be applied to various surfaces within this seaside restaurant set.

The Hotel Room of the Future at The Independent Hotel Show:

For the ‘Hotel Room of The Future’ concept, interior designers Nicholas Sunderland and Gilly Craft of Two’s Company have chosen leading brands and specialists in their field to help create a unique and beautiful space. “Creating a room with 21st century technology, luxury, comfort and outstanding service, as well as seamless interaction with front of house and housekeeping, are the challenges of today’s hotelier,” says Two’s Company. “Technology is important but should not be invasive or difficult to use. It should be intelligent and responsive, seamlessly integrated into the room. In addition, the guest requires comfort, elegance and a style that is unique and individual. Our choices to convey this are carefully chosen and researched to create a room with outstanding products and service.”

In the Two’s company set, the en-suite bathroom walls will be formed from Corian® in luxurious Grey Onyx, a highly popular new shade which offers a rich, swirling veined effect, and which will be backlit to make the most of material’s ethereal translucency. The bedside shelves will also be made from Corian® and will feature wireless Corian® Charging Surface technology, which enables smart devices to be powered up directly through the table top.

KBS Shanghai, Jun 5-8 2018

The June 2018 China Kitchen & Bath Exhibition is a milestone for the company’s brand rejuvenation initiative. This show further introduced “Corian® Design – Make Your Space™” into the consumer market; unleashed unlimited design possibility through crossovers with other industry manufacturers and partners; and showcased Corian® Design breakthrough technology (Corian® Solid Surface with Resilience Technology™) and innovative aesthetics.

The new master brand of Corian® Design with the promise of “Make Your Space™” was launched in July 2017. The master brand focuses on the potential in combining function and beauty in spaces using Corian® products. Corian® Design believes in putting the customer, at the center of every decision it makes—that is why it has adopted the brand tagline “Make YOUR space”. Its portfolio of offerings enables customers to create a space that delivers the right feeling combined with the functionality to fit their lifestyle.

The exhibition spotlighted Corian® new aesthetics as well as combining different design elements to redefine the experience in kitchen and bath spaces. Corian® kitchen sinks, shower trays, and bath tub series can seamlessly join with Corian® cladding and countertop; providing flexibility and unprecedented experience without sacrificing functionality in kitchen and bath design.

During an interview by world renowned design magazine, Architectural Digest (AD), Corian® Design Global Business VP Julie J. Eaton stated: “Corian® Design's flexibility in meeting every design need is an important element to our new brand rejuvenation concept of “Make Your Space™”. We have spent over a year to understand the Chinese market, and integrate performance and flexibility into Corian®. The applications of Corian® Design are not limited to kitchen and bath, they can be extended to living room, bedroom and every space that we use in daily life.”

In the exhibition, the Corian® Design team also introduced featured collaborations with different industry partners. The Corian® crossover Kohler kitchen set used Corian® Solid Surface and Corian® Quartz to further enhance the kitchen experience for the Asian market by bringing in both flexibility and durability tailored to the area need. Corian® also collaborated with the innovative company, WeCare (WC), in providing a revolutionary washroom space to the market. This showcased leading the industry trends in washroom total solutions.

Corian® Design also took the exhibition beyond external company brand crossovers. DowDuPont hero products were integrated in the space to emphasize that idea of “Make your space” and enhancing the quality of living spaces. Some of the exhibited products included DuPont™ Tyvek® contemporary furniture and Dow water filtration systems.

The Kitchen and Bath Exhibition with Corian® Design was a remarkable success. Leveraging VR space simulation and live demos of Corian® Resilience Technology™— crowds of kitchen makers, designers, channel partners and fabricators flooded into the Corian® Design exhibition space. The booth has proven that Corian® is more than just a countertop material—it is an element that can be integrated into every space to make it unique for you.

Corian® is the ultimate solution for bridging modern science and contemporary design together. The unlimited flexibility, innovative aesthetics and remarkable performance has redefined the experience in commercial spaces, living spaces, and public areas.

Make it unique: Corian® Solid Surface adds an extra dimension to kitchen islands

With 41% of newly installed kitchens including an island*, this impactful feature has become an integral part of the kitchen.

It’s easy to see why - an island unit brings together usability and practicality with the opportunity to design and create a truly unique centrepiece.

Corian® Solid Surface lends itself perfectly to kitchen islands. This versatile and attractive material is available in an extensive choice of colours and provides the ultimate freedom of expression in kitchen design, from crisp contemporary to warm and welcoming traditional styles.

Colin Wong’s ‘The Rock’ concept, which debuted at KBB 2018, combining Corian® Solid Surface in Juniper with backlit strips of Corian® Solid Surface in Verano White hue. Fabricated by Wharf Seamless Worktops.

Its unique properties allow for innovative features to be seamlessly integrated. For example, the ability of Corian® Solid Surface to be fabricated as thin sections can be combined with the clever use of backlighting to achieve a highly dramatic effect. This brings a touch of glamour and warmth, focusing light levels where needed most, and adding a whole new dimension to how lighting is experienced in the kitchen area.

The island made with backlit Corian® Solid Surface in Grey Onyx colour proved to be the most popular island on our stand at KBB 2018. A multitude of integrated technologies and features, including wireless charging and backlighting, ensured the visually impactful island was as smart as it was stunning. Fabricated by Cutting Edge (Pitstone) LLP.

A further advantage of working with Corian® Solid Surface is its ease of formability and seamless qualities. Curves, angles and textures can all be achieved with no visible joins or seams, ensuring organic shapes and long lengths flow and blend into the kitchen environment.

Hygienic, durable and long-lasting, the properties of Corian® Solid Surface allow you to design integrated features such as wireless charging, champagne troughs, drying racks and more.

Combine all this with the ability to integrate features such as wireless charging, champagne troughs, drying racks and more, and it is clear to see why Corian® Solid Surface is an ideal choice for designers and fabricators alike. When it comes to kitchen islands, the only limit is your imagination.

At imm Cologne, Corian® presents its new colour collections for interior design

During the 2018 edition of the imm international interiors show in Cologne (15-21 January 2018), Corian® will present an inspiring selection of ideas for living and working with such a multi-talented material. At stand K-021, Hall 2.2, a series of displays and settings – residential kitchens, spa style bathrooms, hotel receptions, retail environments, restaurants – will showcase all the elegance, variety and versatility of the latest colours and shapes on offer from Corian® design surface.

Embracing its heritage while moving confidently into the future, Corian® has created three fresh aesthetics – Concrete, Onyx and Prima – each offering distinctive character and personality to create a memorable mood. Achieved with the use of exclusive technologies, the new aesthetics offer outstanding potential for decoration and design, embodying a robust visual texture and creating a dynamic modernity while also evoking warmth, opulence, strength and emotion.

The Concrete aesthetic for Corian® is visually subtle yet makes a strong statement, offering a firm chromatic foundation on which to build a design project through working with a durable and classic material. Inspired by urban landscapes, four neutral colours offer abundant application possibilities. A chameleon quality allows these background hues to enhance interior and exterior spaces, whether traditional or modern.

With bold style and visual depth, the Onyx aesthetic of Corian®, offers the added beauty of translucence. Inherent properties allow for the transfer of light through the surface to create an ethereal effect. Incorporating semi-transparent veining, the two new colours are striking when lit from above and even more spectacular when seemingly illuminated from within. An intriguing drama emerges from the play of light and shadow, taking these new choices beyond the ordinary.

Prima offers a further new dimension, enabling directional designs and optimising the valuable properties of Corian® that allow new colour technologies to emerge. Embedded hues create a remarkable patterning and sweeping movement. Natural in inspiration, confident in design, eight new shades embody varying moods and sensations, offering unique, dynamic aesthetics.

A selection of these new colours can be seen at stand K-021, Hall 2.2 at imm Cologne show in applications ranging from kitchen worksurfaces to hospitality counters and from to partition walls to creating a cocoon for the most calming of bathrooms.

Corian® showcases Museu do Amanhã permanent collection in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil

Corian® advanced surface has been used to create the dramatic backdrop and furniture for the permanent collection of the newly opened Museu do Amanhã in Rio de Janeiro. The museum is part of the revitalisation of the city’s docklands, a city hall initiative. Unique design and cutting-edge technology have transformed Corian® into a collection of highly innovative creations. The pieces are designed with tomorrow in mind and represent man’s role as an agent for changing the future.

Cosmos

Cosmos – a black ‘egg’ measuring 20m long, 14m wide and 11m high – is made in Corian® in the Nocturne colour. It is a large elliptical-shaped structure in which each piece has been formed, including the entry and exit tunnels. The piece features huge monolithic areas inside which provide visitors with their first immersive experience on entering the museum. With space for 200 people, ‘Cosmos’ enables visitors to experience a sensory journey through the universe, based on a virtual tour in a 360-degree dome. They can travel through galaxies, dive into the subatomic world of elementary particles, enter the Sun's heart, and observe how the Earth was formed and life began.

Cosmos and the Interactive Tables

One of the highlights of this first immersive experience is 'Cosmic Horizons', a series of six interactive tables in a cup shape measuring 130cm in diameter and 80cm tall. Again fabricated in Corian® in the Nocturne tone, the tables include built-in monitors allowing visitors to interact more deeply with aspects of the universe. The pieces are molded using a vacuum technique and have tops with precise oval cuts. One of the key features of the design is the beveled finishing which allows for the installation of monitors and reading slots.

Tomorrow's Tables

The Tomorrow Tables, made with Corian® in Nocturne colour; photo Andres Otero, all rights reserved.

'Tomorrow's Tables' have been fabricated in a similar way. The three geometrically-shape tables each have different dimensions (400 x 200cm, 300 x 220cm and 330 x 200cm, all 95 cm high). They are the focus of the ‘tomorrow’ theme which unfolds in an 'origami' shaped area of the Museum. Fabricated completely in Corian®, the 'Tomorrow's Tables' have a metal frame designed to support each element of Corian® and the multiple monitors. These monitors alternate between showing a series of trends and scenarios, and interactive activities that place the visitor as an agent for constructing the future of our world. Achieving this fully customised design was possible thanks to the high tech abilities of Corian®, which offers imperceptible seams, appearing to be a single and continuous piece. With Corian®, it is possible to create designs with real personality: the product is easily adaptable to virtually any format or location, providing complete creative freedom.

Churinga Base

The Churinga base, Made with Corian® in Rice paper colour; photo Andres Otero, all rights reserved.

Located in the 'We' space in the Museum, ‘Churinga’ invites visitors to reflect on what we will leave for future generations. An Australian aborigine's artifact, the piece is more than an object: it is an endless ‘tool’ that links the past to the future by tying previous generations' knowledge and legacy to future generations. The Churinga base has a flattened circular design with different radii and angles, and measures 240cm in diameter and 55cm high. It was fabricated in Corian® (Rice Paper colour, available in Brasil) and then treated by artist Mana Bernardes with raw clay painting and handwriting to create a more rustic effect. In addition, floodlights have been embedded which illuminate the ‘Oca’, with the lighting equipment concealed within the design.

Logo and Service Counters

The service counters, which feature geometric shapes are also made in Corian® (Glacier White colour): they take charge of the Museum’s visual communications. More than 400 letters and identification icons have been produced in Corian®. One of the highlights is the main logo, inspired by a ‘sticks’ game, which is composed of more than 300 pieces of Corian® in Glacier White tone, decorated with eleven different colours of automotive paint.

Corian® adds to the warm welcome around the London Design Festival, giving re-usable shape to various public installations

Corian® has featured prominently at the London Design Festival for many years, especially when a dynamic design also involves direct public interaction, thus demanding both robust performance and striking beauty.

This combination of elegance and durability also means that certain installations offer the sustainable bonus of a long and reusable life, reprising their role either at the London Design Festival or as permanent features in other locations. This year sees both brand new projects in Corian® by emerging talent and the return of key pieces designed to make the Victoria and Albert Museum hub welcoming and informative for the vast number of Festival visitors.

Shapescape by Kangan Arora at the London Design Fair

Kangan Arora has created the 25 metre facade and show signage for the London Design Fair (Tent, Superbrands and International pavilions at the Truman Brewery) as a ‘shapescape’ comprising various materials and surfaces, including multiple elements in Corian® to greet the 25,000 design aficionados who visit the show over four days. Kangan chose Corian® in Everest, Warm Grey, White Cap, Strawberry Ice, Grand Brown and Deep Nocturne colours and fully exploited the material’s formability to create a range of intriguing shapes and patterns. Several of the pieces used were off-cuts of Corian® from the fabrication process of commercial projects.

100% Design Modular Bar by Studio Glowacka, Olympia

100% Design Modular Bar by Studio Glowacka. 5 separate modules based around an aluminum frame with a birch ply skirt, concealed fixings and countertop elements made from Corian® in Juniper.

Studio Glowacka have come up with a clever concept for the main bar at 100% Design, in the form of a modular system that can be re-used by show organisers Media 10 for this and other events. Maximising the natural advantages of the hexagon, both aesthetic and practical, they have created 5 separate modules based around an aluminum frame with a birch ply skirt, concealed fixings and countertop elements made from Corian® in Juniper (one of the new Earth Heritage colours).

Pop-up Shop by Loris&Livia at the V&A

ISLE by LORIS&LIVIA. A pop-up shop for the London Design Festival in the V&A made from Corian® in Mint Ice.

Corian® forms the LDF temporary design store. Created in partnership with the V&A, the stand-alone display is located within the museum’s permanent shop and sells a specially created collection of souvenirs celebrating the capital. These include a clock made from Corian® by Pentagram with London postcodes instead of numbers.

‘Isle’ is designed by Loris&Livia, the London-based, Swiss-born design duo, who have maximised the material to bring a distinctive form to the display. An intriguingly shaped, multi-level unit with integrated lighting, the display system is seamlessly wrapped in Corian® in the Mint Ice colour.

The eye-catching curved LDF information desk is made from sections of ultra-versatile Corian®, which has been machined into a specially designed finish created by Giles Miller Studio, renowned for a fascination with the manipulation of light and reflection in surfaces.

Taking classic louvre slats as inspiration, Giles Miller Studio generated panels with various levels of directional reflection inlaid into the surface. The panels interplay with the light depending on their orientation and the effect is beautifully fulfilled in this dazzling display of geometric reflection. The depth of texture in the design is enhanced by the choice of Deep Nocturne – created with DeepColour™ Technology by DuPont which enables deeper, more intense and more durable hues, with easier fabrication and improved resistance to wear.
